Dragon Ball: Age 1000 New Game Officially Confirmed For 2027

The Dragon Ball franchise has just revealed a completely new game called Dragon Ball: Age 1000 at today’s Genkidamatsuri event.

The title introduces a fresh original character personally designed by Akira Toriyama and is planned for release in 2027. Staff members noted that the project kicked off some time ago and has seen extensive development efforts.

Check out the announcement trailer below:

The Dragon Ball video games draw from Akira Toriyama‘s manga series of the same name. Starting in 1990, they were released under the Dragon Ball Z label, following the launch of the second anime TV series. These titles span multiple genres, especially fighting games, role-playing games, and platformers, each showcasing a diverse lineup of characters from the source material. Akira Toriyama personally created certain original characters for the games, including Android 21 in Dragon Ball FighterZ, Mira and Towa in Dragon Ball Online, and Bonyū in Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.

Since their debut in Japan in 1986, Dragon Ball games have mostly been developed by Bandai. Titles from the 16-bit and 32-bit generations saw localizations and releases in France, Spain, Portugal, and various other European markets, thanks to the series’ established popularity there. Prior to 1994, North America received just one localized game—Dragon Ball: Shenlong no Nazo, rebranded as Dragon Power with modified graphics.

In November 2000, Infogrames, Inc.—the North American arm of French publisher Infogrames—struck a licensing agreement with Funimation Productions to handle Dragon Ball games in North America. Their initial releases, Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku and Dragon Ball Z: Budokai in 2002, more than doubled the company’s sales figures. After rebranding as Atari, they invested $10 million to lock in exclusive North American publishing rights through January 2010. Dragon Ball became Atari’s highest-grossing licensed franchise, generating $85 million in 2005 and comprising over 49% of their yearly revenue in 2008. In November 2007, Funimation accused Atari of violating their publishing agreement and sought to end it, but the dispute was resolved within a month. By 2008, Atari reported sales of more than 12.7 million Dragon Ball game units since May 2002. In July 2009, Namco Bandai Games revealed they had obtained North American publishing rights for Dragon Ball, with new titles rolling out after Atari’s contract ended in January 2010. Their first North American releases included Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, and Dragon Ball: Revenge of King Piccolo.

By December 2014, Dragon Ball video games had surpassed 40 million units sold globally. The Dragon Ball Xenoverse series added another 14 million units from 2015 to 2021, Dragon Ball FighterZ exceeded 10 million, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot topped 8 million, and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero reached over 5 million copies, pushing total software sales beyond 77 million units. Meanwhile, the mobile title Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle has surpassed 300 million downloads and generated more than $3 billion in revenue.
