Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, commonly shortened to Re:Zero or alternatively titled Re: Life in a different world from zero, represents a Japanese light novel series authored by Tappei Nagatsuki and featuring artwork by Shin’ichirō Ōtsuka. The tale began its online journey as a web novel on the community-driven platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō back in 2012. To date, Media Factory has issued 42 main light novel volumes, alongside six side story collections and thirteen compilations of short stories, all under their MF Bunko J label. At its core, the narrative follows Subaru Natsuki, a reclusive hikikomori whose ordinary trip back from the local convenience store abruptly catapults him into an unfamiliar fantasy realm.
The initial four story arcs have each received their own manga adaptations. The debut arc, handled by Daichi Matsue, ran from June 2014 through March 2015. For the second arc, Makoto Fugetsu took the helm, with Square Enix releasing it from October 2014 until January 2017. Matsue returned for the third arc, which spanned May 2015 to September 2019. The fourth arc, crafted by Haruno Atori with contributions from composer Yu Aikawa, debuted in September 2019 and continues serialization. Beyond these, Media Factory has also released a pair of anthology manga volumes, each compiling tales from various contributing artists. The franchise’s anime adaptation, brought to life by studio White Fox, originally broadcast from April to September 2016, kicking off with an extended one-hour premiere episode. Supplementary content arrived in the form of two original video animation (OVA) installments, dropping in October 2018 and November 2019. In March 2017, developer 5pb. launched a visual novel tied to the series. Season two unfolded in a split-cour structure, comprising the initial segment from July to September 2020 and the follow-up from January to March 2021. The third season adopted a similar split-cour approach, with its opening half airing October through November 2024, followed by the concluding portion from February to March 2025.
