Hunter × Hunter (read as “hunter hunter”) is a Japanese manga crafted by writer and artist Yoshihiro Togashi. Launched in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 1998, the series has experienced multiple prolonged breaks since 2006. As of September 2024, its chapters have been compiled into 38 tankōbon volumes. The narrative centers on Gon Freecss, a young boy who learns that his long-absent father is a legendary Hunter—a licensed expert in extraordinary endeavors like tracking rare creatures, seeking treasures, exploring uncharted territories, or pursuing outlaws. Determined to become a Hunter and reconnect with his father, Gon embarks on an adventure, meeting fellow Hunters and encountering supernatural phenomena along the way.
The manga was first adapted into a 62-episode anime by Nippon Animation, directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi, airing on Fuji Television from October 1999 to March 2001. This was followed by three original video animations (OVAs) with 30 episodes, released between 2002 and 2004. A second anime adaptation by Madhouse, spanning 148 episodes, aired on Nippon Television from October 2011 to September 2014, accompanied by two animated feature films in 2013. The Hunter × Hunter franchise also includes audio albums, video games, musicals, and various other media.
