Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian is a Japanese light novel series authored by SunSunSun, with illustrations by Momoco.

The series first appeared online as two short stories on the novel platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō (May 6 and May 27, 2020), before Kadokawa Shoten picked it up and began publishing it in February 2021 under their Sneaker Bunko label.

Story Overview

The story centers on Alisa Mikhailovna Kujou — commonly called Alya — a strikingly beautiful Russo-Japanese high school girl who transfers to a new school in Japan.
She quickly becomes extremely popular thanks to her stunning looks and outstanding academic performance, but her cool, somewhat distant attitude tends to keep most people at arm’s length.

Her seatmate, Masachika Kuze, is the complete opposite: a seemingly lazy, unmotivated, and frequently sleepy boy who stays up late and generally gives off a carefree, low-energy vibe.

Alya often scolds and complains about Masachika… but she secretly has feelings for him.
Every now and then she makes sweet, flirty remarks in Russian — thinking he won’t understand them.
What she doesn’t know is that Masachika actually understands Russian perfectly… and he has been quietly in love with her for a long time too.

Her adorable Russian compliments constantly catch him off guard and leave him internally flustered, even though he tries his best to keep a straight face.

As their relationship slowly deepens, Alya eventually decides to run for Student Council president, choosing Masachika as her vice-presidential running mate.
Their campaign gradually begins to reveal many hidden truths — about their shared past, their complicated family backgrounds, and the real reason why Masachika is fluent in Russian.

Adaptations & Commercial Success

  • A manga adaptation illustrated by Saho Tenamachi began serialization in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket in October 2022.
  • An anime television series produced by Doga Kobo aired from July to September 2024.
  • A second season is scheduled to premiere in 2027.

As of August 2024, the light novel series had surpassed 5 million copies in circulation.
