Vinland Saga manga‘s creator Makoto Yukimura posted on X today that the manga’s final chapter which is the 220th one has been released.
Vinland Saga, crafted by Makoto Yukimura, is a Japanese manga series published by Kodansha. Initially serialized in Weekly Shōnen Magazine, it later transitioned to Monthly Afternoon, targeting young adult men. As of June 2024, the series spans 28 tankōbon volumes, with Kodansha USA securing the English-language license. The narrative reimagines the historical journey of Thorfinn Karlsefni in his quest for Vinland, chronicling his transformation from a vengeance-driven youth to a peace-seeking man. This arc contrasts sharply with the ascent of King Canute, whose path to power serves as a foil to Thorfinn’s evolution.
Drawing inspiration from King Olaf Tryggvason of Norway, Yukimura initially envisioned a story centered on slavery. However, his editor’s reservations led to Thorfinn’s reimagining as a Viking. This shift allowed Yukimura to explore the devastation Thorfinn inflicts as a warrior, paving the way for his pursuit of Vinland as a haven for peaceful coexistence among diverse peoples. Yukimura infused Thorfinn’s trauma with reflections on the Cold War and the September 11 attacks, shaping his quest for redemption and unity.
By August 2022, Vinland Saga had surpassed 7 million copies in circulation. It earned the Grand Prize at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2009 and the 36th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga in 2012. The manga’s critical acclaim stems from its compelling story, intricate art, rich characters, profound themes, and vivid historical setting. A 24-episode anime adaptation by Wit Studio aired from July to December 2019, followed by a second season by MAPPA from January to June 2023.
