The “Yuna First Live” concert from the Sword Art Online franchise wrapped up its online streaming on Wednesday, closing with a teaser announcing a “brand-new original film.”
The preview also hints that further details will be revealed in July.
Sword Art Online is a Japanese light novel franchise authored by Reki Kawahara, with artwork provided by abec. Set in the 2020s, the story centers on main characters Kazuto “Kirito” Kirigaya and Asuna Yuuki. They navigate multiple virtual reality MMORPG environments and eventually become entangled in the affairs of an advanced simulated world.
Kawahara first shared the series as a web novel on his personal site between 2002 and 2008. The official light novel publication kicked off under ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko label on April 10, 2009, followed by a spin-off series that debuted in October 2012. The franchise expanded to include twelve manga adaptations released by ASCII Media Works and Kadokawa. Yen Press holds the licensing rights for English releases of both the novels and manga in North America.
The anime adaptation, produced by A-1 Pictures and titled simply Sword Art Online, broadcast in Japan from July to December 2012. It was followed by the television special Sword Art Online: Extra Edition on December 31, 2013, and the second season, Sword Art Online II, which ran from July to December 2014. An original animated film, Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale—written by Kawahara—debuted in Japan and Southeast Asia on February 18, 2017, before arriving in the United States on March 9, 2017.
Additional projects include the spin-off anime Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, which premiered in April 2018, and the third season, Sword Art Online: Alicization, which aired from October 2018 through September 2020. The Progressive storyline received film adaptations, starting with Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night on October 30, 2021, and continuing with Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night on October 22, 2022.
The series has also inspired a wide array of video games available across consoles, PC, and mobile platforms.
