“Drops of God” is a renowned Japanese manga centered on the world of wine. The narrative is crafted by Tadashi Agi, the pen name used by the sibling duo Yuko and Shin Kibayashi, with artwork provided by Shu Okimoto. The plot unfolds across two main arcs: the initial one follows the journey of lead character Shizuku Kanzaki and his competitor Issei Tomine as they hunt for the legendary “Twelve Apostles” vintages, while the follow-up arc delves into the quest for the elusive “Drops of God.” A brief third installment acts as an epilogue, chronicling Shizuku’s post-challenge existence and his mentorship of Issei’s young daughter.
The manga debuted in Japan’s Weekly Morning magazine in November 2004 and wrapped up its run in June 2014, with the last collected volume released the following month. A follow-up series, “Drops of God: Mariage,” picks up right after the original’s conclusion, chronicling Shizuku’s international adventures to expand his wine expertise and continue pursuing the “Drops of God.” At its core, this sequel examines the harmonious “marriage” of wines with various foods, highlighting diverse pairings. It launched serialization on May 28, 2015—shortly following the end of the first series—and concluded on October 15, 2020, spanning 26 volumes in total.
In September 2023, on the 13th, a new continuation titled “Drops of God deuxième” was revealed, starting its run in Weekly Morning on September 21 and finishing on April 18, 2024. Set in the aftermath of “Mariage,” it features a more seasoned Shizuku globetrotting and settling in Paris to guide Issei’s daughter through the intricacies of wine appreciation. This edition was concise, comprising just two volumes.
The “Drops of God” franchise has achieved remarkable acclaim for its precise depictions of wines, compelling characters, engaging storyline, and stunning visuals, while also gaining notoriety for its profound influence on the international wine industry—particularly boosting sales of the bottles highlighted within its pages. Additionally, it has sparked two live-action television series adaptations.
