The Saga of Tanya the Evil, titled Yōjo Senki in Japan, is a Japanese light novel series authored by Carlo Zen and featuring illustrations by Shinobu Shinotsuki. It first appeared in serialized form online in 2010 via the user-driven novel platform Arcadia. In October 2013, Enterbrain took over the series, releasing a total of fourteen volumes as of September 2023. A manga version, illustrated by Chika Tōjō, started running in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine in April 2016.
At its core, the story follows a corporate salaryman who finds himself reborn as the central figure in a reimagined take on World War I, ensnared in a perpetual loop of reincarnation. Determined to steer clear of an untimely death and instead meet his end through old age, Tanya adopts a ruthless, sadistic alter ego, striving to enlist in the Empire’s Mage Corps as a key step toward forging an image of near-invulnerability.
The property received an anime TV adaptation produced by NUT, which aired on Japanese networks between January and March 2017. Subsequently, Saga of Tanya the Evil: The Movie—a feature film set in the aftermath of the anime—premiered in Japanese theaters in February 2019.
