The Irregular at Magic High School is a Japanese web novel series written by Tsutomu Satō. It originally appeared on the web novel platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō, running from October 2008 until March 2011. Subsequently, Dengeki Bunko issued 32 volumes of the light novel adaptation between July 2011 and September 2020.

Set in Japan’s 2090s, an era where advanced technology has integrated magic into everyday life, the narrative centers on siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba as they join First High magic high school. The pair strives for a normal routine, concealing their ties to the notorious Yotsuba clan, though Tatsuya faces rejection due to his seemingly poor skills, whereas Miyuki draws admiration for her exceptional magical prowess.

Starting in 2013, manga versions of the individual story arcs emerged, handled by different artists and publishers. In that same year, a television anime adaptation produced by Madhouse was revealed, broadcasting from April through September 2014. The overall franchise has seen English releases handled by two entities: Yen Press holds the rights to the light novels and a single manga edition, whereas Aniplex of America oversees the anime. The initial anime aired simultaneously across four channels and eventually became accessible on Netflix. A theatrical anime with an original plot crafted by Satō debuted in Japan during June 2017, followed by a second season from Eight Bit—set post the original anime—that ran from October to December 2020 and streamed live on Funimation and Hulu. In 2021, Connect animated the spin-off series The Honor Student at Magic High School, which aired July to September. That December, a movie based on the “Reminiscence Arc” hit theaters. The third season launched in April 2024. Looking ahead, an upcoming anime film covering the “Yotsuba Succession Arc” is scheduled for a May 2026 release.
