New Evangelion Series Announced: NieR:Automata’s Yoko Taro Takes the Helm

The iconic Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise is expanding once again with a brand-new anime series, this time featuring a surprising creative twist.

The announcement came during the final day of the “EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION” festival held in Yokohama, Japan, on February 23, 2026—a national holiday event packed with exhibitions, discussions, a kabuki adaptation, and even a fresh 15-minute short spotlighting Asuka Langley.

For this fresh installment, Yoko Taro—renowned as the creative force behind the NieR series (including the acclaimed NieR:Automata), as well as earlier works like Drakengard and SINoALICE—will handle series composition and screenplay duties. His involvement brings an intriguing layer, given how he has long cited Evangelion as a major influence on his storytelling style, which often explores existential themes, multiple perspectives, and emotional devastation.

Directing the project are two veterans with deep ties to the franchise: Kazuya Tsurumaki (known for his work on the Rebuild of Evangelion films, FLCL, and other Gainax/Khara titles) and Toko Yatabe (who served in assistant director roles on the later Rebuild movies and has character design credits on other anime). The soundtrack will be composed by Keiichi Okabe, a frequent collaborator with Taro on the NieR games and a master of haunting, atmospheric scores.

Production is a joint effort between Studio Khara (founded by original Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno) and CloverWorks.

No plot details, title, or release window have been shared yet. The official statement stresses that this will be a completely new series, separate from previous entries—meaning it may not directly continue Shinji Ikari’s arc that wrapped up in the 2021 film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, though specifics remain under wraps.

This development marks an exciting crossover between anime and gaming worlds, blending Evangelion‘s psychological depth and mecha action with Taro’s signature blend of melancholy, philosophy, and unexpected narrative twists. Fans are already buzzing about the potential for something truly unconventional.

Stay tuned for more updates as details emerge!
