Mononoke is a Japanese anime television series created by Toei Animation. It serves as a spin-off from the 2006 horror anthology series Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales and continues the story of the enigmatic Medicine Seller as he confronts a wide array of supernatural threats.
Set during the turbulent transition from the late Edo period to the Meiji era in Japan, the series unfolds within a rigid four-class social hierarchy, where samurai stand at the top and merchants — including the Medicine Seller himself — occupy the lowest rung.
The anime has inspired several adaptations, including manga versions, two stage plays, and a feature film trilogy. The first film was released in 2024, the second in 2025, and the concluding installment is scheduled for 2026.
The story centers on a nameless wanderer known simply as the “Medicine Seller.” Each episode functions as a self-contained chapter in which he encounters dangerous mononoke, battles them, and ultimately banishes them. Mononoke are a form of ayakashi — unnatural spirits that remain tethered to the human world by feeding on people’s negative emotions.
The Medicine Seller follows a consistent ritual in every confrontation: he uses his deep knowledge of the occult to hold the spirit at bay while uncovering its three essential elements — Katachi (shape/form), Makoto (truth), and Kotowari (reasoning). Only after revealing these can he draw his sword and perform the exorcism. In the English subtitles, these three keys are rendered as form, truth, and regret.
