Attack on Titan: Murder Mystery Officially Confirmed

Although the Attack on Titan manga and television adaptation have wrapped up, the franchise remains a powerful force in the anime landscape even now. Come next year, a remastered edition of the pulse-racing movie Attack on Titan: The Last Attack will grace Japanese cinemas once more, highlighting the enduring appeal of the Scout Regiment’s desperate clashes with those enormous Titans. In an unexpected turn, Hajime Isayama’s creation is gearing up for bold new adventures via the confirmed “Attack on Titan Murder Mystery.”

Release details for the forthcoming board game are still under wraps, yet Studio Ozon has verified that the official tie-in is proceeding. The outfit has previously partnered with anime properties like Tokyo Revengers to produce murder mysteries as well. Wondering about the format of these games? Here’s Ozon’s explanation of the collaboration:

“This interactive mystery game allows players to unravel the mystery of a crime together with their friends, sometimes playing the role of the culprit and deceiving their friends.”

Attack on Titan is a Japanese manga created and drawn by Hajime Isayama. The narrative unfolds in a grim world where humans must reside within urban areas enclosed by three massive walls, shielding them from colossal, flesh-devouring beings known as Titans. The plot centers on Eren Yeager, a young boy who pledges to wipe out the Titans following the devastating breach that razes his hometown and claims his mother’s life. It ran in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on a monthly basis from September 2009 until April 2021, compiling its installments into 34 tankōbon volumes.

The anime adaptation was handled by Wit Studio for the initial three seasons and by MAPPA for the fourth. The debut season, spanning 25 episodes, aired between April and September 2013, succeeded by a 12-episode second season that ran from April through June 2017. The third season, totaling 22 episodes, was split into two segments: the opening 12 episodes from July to October 2018, and the concluding 10 from April to July 2019. The fourth and concluding season launched in December 2020 with 16 episodes in its initial segment. This was followed by a 12-episode second segment airing January to April 2022, while the third and fourth segments took the form of specials—the first debuting in March 2023, and the second in November 2023.

Attack on Titan has garnered widespread acclaim from critics and strong commercial performance. As of November 2023, the manga boasted more than 140 million copies sold worldwide, cementing its status among the top-selling manga ever. It has secured multiple honors, such as the Kodansha Manga Award, the Attilio Micheluzzi Award, and the Harvey Award.
