Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a 2020 action-adventure comedy movie inspired by the iconic Sonic video game franchise. As the inaugural entry in the Sonic cinematic universe, it marks the feature directorial debut of Jeff Fowler, with a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, and features a voice cast led by Ben Schwartz, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey. Schwartz lends his voice to Sonic, the speedy blue anthropomorphic hedgehog capable of supersonic velocities, who joins forces with local sheriff Tom Wachowski to thwart the schemes of the deranged genius Dr. Robotnik aiming for global domination.

The journey to bring Sonic to the big screen kicked off in the 1990s, remaining in early development limbo until Sony Pictures secured the rights in 2013. Jeff Fowler joined as director in 2016. When Sony opted to shelve the project, Paramount Pictures picked it up in 2017. The primary actors committed to their roles by August 2018. Filming commenced in September and wrapped in October of that year, primarily in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, with an initial target premiere on November 8, 2019. Public backlash to the initial trailer dropped in April 2019 prompted Paramount to push back the release by three months, allowing for a visual overhaul of Sonic to better align with his classic game appearance.

The film made its world premiere on the Paramount Pictures lot on January 25, 2020. It hit theaters across the United States on February 14 and arrived in Japan on June 26, earning a divided response from critics. It shattered records with the largest debut weekend ever for a video game adaptation in the U.S. and Canada, ultimately pulling in $320 million globally—ranking it as the sixth top-earning movie of 2020 and the most profitable video game-based film in North America. This success paved the way for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), and the short-form series Knuckles (2024).
