Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube is a classic Japanese manga series penned by Shō Makura and brought to life with illustrations by Takeshi Okano. It ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, the premier shōnen manga magazine, from August 1993 through May 1999, ultimately compiled into 31 tankōbon volumes.
The story centers on Meisuke Nueno—better known as Nube—who serves as the homeroom teacher for Class 5-3 at Dōmori Elementary School. Beneath his ordinary educator role lies a remarkable secret: Nube is a talented spiritual medium and exorcist. He defends the residents of Dōmori from yokai and other paranormal dangers using the immense power of the Demon’s Hand, a fearsome oni sealed within his left hand.
An anime adaptation consisting of 49 episodes, produced by Toei Animation and known in English simply as Nube, aired on TV Asahi from April 1996 to August 1997. It was accompanied by three theatrical films and three OVA episodes. A fresh anime reboot, this time from Studio Kai, broadcast its first cour from July to September 2025 on the same network, with the second cour scheduled to begin in January 2026.
The franchise also includes a spin-off centered on the young itako Izuna Hazuki titled Reibaishi Izuna: The Spiritual Medium, which was serialized between 2007 and 2011, followed by its direct sequel Reibaishi Izuna: Ascension from 2011 to 2016. Additional continuations of the core series feature Jigoku Sensei Nūbē Neo (2014–2018), Jigoku Sensei Nūbē S (2018–2021), the ongoing Jigoku Sensei Nube Kai (launched in 2025), and the short-run Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube Plus (2025).
As of July 2024, the entire manga franchise has surpassed 29 million copies in circulation.
