Suzume anime film made 340 million yuan which is about US$49.42 million on its first three-day weekend in China, according to Makoto Shinkai, with over 10 million tickets sold.
This substantially outperformed Suzume’s 1.88 billion yen about $13.51 million opening weekend in Japan, which was previously the biggest opening weekend for a Shinkai movie in his home country, and is the best debut for a Shinkai movie in China.
Suzume opened to 100 million yuan (US$14.66 million), the largest pre-sales for an animated film in Chinese ever, on March 23.
This actually raises Suzume’s total worldwide earnings to US$188.12 million as of March 27, and places Suzume as the 9th highest-grossing anime movie of all time and finally knocks Pokรฉmon: The First Movie out of the top 10, where it had stood for ten years.
Suzume no Tojimari anime movie premiered in Japan on November 11.
