Three weeks after its release in China, Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume film has raked in more than 720 million yuan (US$105 million), making it the highest-selling Japanese animation in the nation ever.

By Friday, 21.64 million tickets had been sold for the movie in mainland China.

Suzume has sold more tickets in South Korea than any other Japanese movie, according to the official Twitter account for the movie, which made the announcement on Saturday. The movie is currently the most successful 2023 opening to date, with 4,482,051 tickets sold in South Korea. The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) reports that the movie has so far made US$35,783,322.

Suzume no Tojimari anime movie premiered in Japan on November 11.

CoMix Wave Films portrays the anime film as following:

โ€œOn the other side of the door, was time in its entiretyโ€”

17-year-old Suzumeโ€™s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, โ€œIโ€™m looking for a door.โ€ What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly mesmerized by its power, Suzume reaches for the knobโ€ฆ

Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

The stars
The sunset
The morning sky

Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the skyโ€”

Drawn in by this mysterious door, Suzumeโ€™s journey is about to begin.โ€
