Suzume In China

Makoto Shinkai is rapidly making a reputation for himself in the anime industry, in part because of his critically and award-winning films like Your Name and Weathering With You.

The anime movie, Suzume, is creating a lot of buzz at the box office in China as it prepares to open in theaters in North America for the first time later this month. In fact, judging by the trajectory of the anime film, it may very well be the biggest Japanese animated film to ever open in Chinese theaters.

Suzume made almost $50 million USD in China over the course of its first three days, which suggests that the earnings may surpass Japan’s total. After his most recent success, Shinkai has yet to declare what his next endeavor will be, but it appears that he won’t have any trouble coming up with new animated works based on his prior accomplishments. It will be fascinating to see if an anime movie will unseat Mugen Train in the near future given how popular anime is becoming in general.

CoMix Wave Films portrays the anime film as following:

“On the other side of the door, was time in its entirety—

17-year-old Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly mesmerized by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob…

Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

The stars
The sunset
The morning sky

Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky—

Drawn in by this mysterious door, Suzume’s journey is about to begin.”
