Intense battles against two fresh recruits to Muzan Kibutsuji’s Upper Ranks have been taking place in Demon Slayer season 3, and the most recent episode has revealed the secret behind Hantengu’s ability.

Hantengu stood out from the other demons when he was originally exposed as one of the Upper Four. Despite the inherent strength that comes with holding such a position in Muzan’s ranks, Hantengu first appeared to be wary. It wasn’t until the demon engaged in combat with Tanjiro that anime viewers realized the genuine danger that Hantengu poses.

It was originally stated in Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc that chopping off Hantengu’s heads only produced four clones, each of whom stood for a distinct emotion. Despite the fact that each of these demons seemed to possess Upper Rank power on its own, Tanjiro found that eliminating all four of them did not completely eliminate the demon. The most recent episode explains why, since Hantengu’s skills have a very humorous trick.

Tanjiro learns in Demon Slayer season 3 episode 6 that there was something peculiar about killing the four Emotion Demons. When the hot springs’ sulfurous odor fades, Tanjiro realizes there is actually a secret fifth scent tucked away amid the others. Tanjiro follows the scent until he discovers that the original Hantengu had shrunk down and was running around in fright as he awaited the Emotions to kill all of the demon slayers while Genya and Nezuko fend off the Emotion Demons.

It then turns into a frantic chase after Hantengu as the Emotions are trying to take down the little demon after begging Genya for assistance while he and Nezuko keep the others at bay. Genya is unable to sever Hantengu’s head even after making contact.
