The Swordsmith Village arc of Demon Slayer season 3 has reached its conclusion and a prolonged finale will follow, putting the great battle to a close.
Meanwhile, the season’s last episode gives hints on Hantengu’s own terrible past. One aspect of Demon Slayer that stood out to viewers was the revelation of a particular demon’s past as a down-on-his-luck human who chose this dreadful path due to a bad life occasionally following Tanjiro Kamado’s defeat of a terrifying opponent. But this season hadn’t yet had that kind of moment.
The Upper Five Gyokko was easily vanquished in Demon Slayer season 3 by the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito, but the demon was such a dreadful being that no time was spent contemplating a potential history. That appears to be reserved for the primary Upper Rank of the Swordsmith Village Arc, since the conclusion of the most recent Demon Slayer episode sets up an investigation into Hantengu’s horrific background and how it shaped the distinct type of demon he is now.
Hantengu appeared to be much more shy than the others, thus Demon Slayer season 3 was astonished to learn that he was actually the fourth-most potent demon in Muzan Kibutsuji’s Upper Ranks. Then it became clear that his method of combat consisted of hiding while body sprouts wreaked havoc. But as Tanjiro and the others close in on him in the most recent episode, Hantengu begins to think back on his past, and it becomes clear that he was probably betrayed in a significant way before he turned into a demon.
Hantengu sobs during Demon Slayer season 3 episode 10 when Tanjiro informs the demon that he must account for all of his faults, but Hantengu persists in saying that his hands are clean despite all of the deaths he has brought about. It brings up memories of being called a liar and being told to face consequences for his misdeeds.
