TOHO Animation published the second trailer for Studio 4°C’s anime movie of Daisuke Igarashi’s Children of the Sea (Kaijū no Kodomo) manga on Friday. The recordings see Kenshi Yonezu‘s theme song “Umi no Yūrei” (Ghost of the Sea).
Yonezu composed and plays out the song. The recently composed tune is Yonezu’s first subject for a movie. Yonezu and Igarashi have been companions since Yonezu contributed the official picture tune for Igarashi’s “Louver No. 9 — Manga, the ninth Art” historical center presentation in France in 2016.
VIZ Media is publishing the manga in English, and it describes the story like this:
When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does.
Ruka’s dad and the other adults who work at the aquarium are only distantly aware of what the children are experiencing as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans’ fish.
Joe Hisaishi of Studio Ghibli acclaim is forming the music for the film. Ayumu Watanabe (Space Brothers, After the Rain) is coordinating, and Kenichi Konishi(Tokyo Godfathers, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya) is the movement chief and character fashioner.
The movie will open in Japan on June 7. GKIDS will screen the film theatrically in North America in Japanese and English in 2019.
